Wavelets and differential operators: from fractals to Marr’s primal sketch

Invariance is an attractive principle for specifying image processing algorithms. In this presentation, we promote affine invariance—more precisely, invariance with respect to translation, scaling and rotation. As starting point, we identify the corresponding class of invariant 2D operators: these are combinations of the (fractional) Laplacian and the complex gradient (or Wirtinger operator). We then specify some corresponding differential equation and show that the solution in the real-valued case is either a fractional Brownian field (Mandelbrot and Van Ness, 1968) or a polyharmonic spline (Duchon, 1976), depending on the nature of the system input (driving term): stochastic (white noise) or deterministic (stream of Dirac impulses). The affine invariance of the operator has two important consequences: (1) the statistical self-similarity of the fractional Brownian field, and (2) the fact that the polyharmonic splines specify a multiresolution analysis of L2(R) and lend themselves to the construction of wavelet bases. The other fundamental implication is that the corresponding wavelets behave like multi-scale versions of the operator from which they are derived; this makes them ideally suited for the analysis of multidimensional signals with fractal characteristics (whitening property of the fractional Laplacian).

Wavelet primal sketch representation using Marr wavelet pyramid and its reconstruction
Based on the class of complex gradient-Laplace operators, we show the design of a non-separable two-dimensional wavelet basis from a single and analytically defined generator wavelet function. The wavelet decomposition is implemented by an efficient FFT-based filterbank. By allowing for slight redundancy, we obtain the Marr wavelet pyramid decomposition that features improved translation-invari...
متن کاملPrimal Sketch: Integrating Texture and Structure
Following Marr’s insight, we propose a generative image representation called primal sketch, which integrates two modeling components. The first component explains the structural part of an image, such as object boundaries, by a hidden layer of image primitives. The second component models the remaining textural part without distinguishable elements by Markov random fields that interpolate the ...
متن کاملTowards a Mathematical Theory of Primal Sketch and Sketchability
In this paper, we present a mathematical theory for Marr’s primal sketch. We first conduct a theoretical study of the descriptive Markov random field model and the generative wavelet/sparse coding model from the perspective of entropy and complexity. The competition between the two types of models defines the concept of “sketchability”, which divides image into texture and geometry. We then pro...
متن کاملPrimal sketch: Integrating structure and texture
This article proposes a generative image model, which is called “primal sketch,” following Marr’s insight and terminology. This model combines two prominent classes of generative models, namely, sparse coding model and Markov random field model, for representing geometric structures and stochastic textures respectively. Specifically, the image lattice is divided into structure domain and textur...
متن کاملStable Estimation of a Topographic Primal Sketch for Range Image Interpretation
This paper describes how range images can be segmented using the sign of differential geometry operators such as the mean and Gaussian curvatures. This segmentation called topographic primal sketch is invariant to rigid body motion in space and is defined by eight fundamental surfaces. The first part of the paper presents two novel techniques where an initial estimate of the categories, full of...
